The Animals Are in Cages

Pour commencer, après avoir situé Prague pour un public américain : « Beyond the Atlantic, eastward from New York, there is a continent called Europe. In the center of this continent is a small country about whose beauty not many people know. And in the center of this wonderful land is a still more wonderful city called Prague », Adolf Hoffmeister précise à propos de son personnage central : « His name was Jan Prokop, but any resemblance between characters in this book and real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental » et, un peu plus loin, le personnage se présente comme « A writer and catoonist.
